Its been months when I learn how to surf the net using my mobile phone. Using Wireless Active Protocol (WAP) over General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) is a convenient way to be portable. I can check my web-based e-mail and download attached documents anywhere. I can chat with my online buddies everywhere I go. And I'm doing all these for FREE. Well, almost.
To start surfing, have your phone's GPRS/Web settings set-up. And let it be used by your phone's web browser. For my case, I have a Nokia 6280 and subscribed on Globe Prepaid Network (Philippines). Every network's GPRS settings differ from one another.
Disclaimer: If you would be blaming me if you'd damage your handset by following these steps, then better not do them. I am not reliable of the damage or cost that will occur. I am just providing information that worked for me or the stated people. Thank you.
Note: Please read the whole post first before trying out the instructions.
For Globe subscribers:
To get your settings automatically, compose an SMS, type "GO <phone model>" and send to 2951. You will then receive your settings shortly. Save them.
If you didn't receive any, maybe your handset is not supported for automatic settings or something. But you always can do that manually. Follow this link (at the end part of the page) for step-by-step instructions on how to set them up. If your handset is not listed, you can try following steps for similar models. Like for example, I used the instructions for Nokia 6280 on my sister's Nokia 3500. They are pretty much the same.
If you set it up correctly, then you're ready to go.
Globe Network charge you for every kilobyte of data received or for every minute you are online (I think). But how do I do it for free, you'd ask. The sites that I surf is limited only to Yahoo Mobile and Globe WAP Site. Yes, that's very limited but Yahoo is only what I need.
I changed my phone's browser settings so that images will not be loaded when I visit sites. That way, I will receive much smaller data. From my experience, I have not paid a single cent while browsing with images off. I also have downloaded hundreds of kilobytes of files off of my email to my mobile phone.

Logging in to Yahoo! WAP Messenger sets your status message to "I'm Mobile" by default. Many are mistaking it the same as "I'm on SMS" status message and saying that it will cost me much money to reply. Its on different world. Well, maybe a little bit the same because you receive messages on your mobile phone.
So, if my status message in YM is "I'm Mobile" or I have a mobile icon, don't hesitate to message. I can still receive and read your message. Just dont expect me to reply instantly.
If you encounter minor problems, post a comment or contact me and I'll try to help out. If you would be asking on how to setup GPRS settings on other networks, my answer is "I don't know". Sorry about that. Maybe you can ask your network's operator regarding that matter.
